Why is Delta flying to Iceland?

Press releases say that Delta will start flying MSP-JFK-KEF starting in
June 2011. I can't figure out why, and I suspect I'm not the only one.

Iceland is a teensy tiny country, with a population of 317,000, which
makes it about the size of Pittsburgh or Toledo. It has modest
interest to tourists, but that market is well served by Icelandair and
Iceland Express, most of whose passengers just transit Iceland between
the US and Europe on cheap flights. It is not close to anywhere.

What is Delta thinking? Do they think it's still 2008 and Iceland's
banks aren't all bankrupt?

R's,
John

Some weird tax advantage that they make use of if they somehow "do
business" there?

(Or, some connection to Iceland Air that meets a special need of their
customer base?)

Perhaps some Minneapolis corporation is investing in some facilities in
Iceland and will generate sufficient business travel ?

Perhaps Delta is seeing cargo opportunities, fresh fish at devalued
icelanding currency being shipped to USA markets ?

Since this is starting in June, I would say that the biggest reason
might be tourism. This may end up being seasonal service.
